That's a photo of the actual bear?!?!? That's terrifying! But don't let John shoot the bear, unless the it goes for your toaster.
Yes...that is indeed a real bear. John took the picture yesterday right across the street. The US Fish and Wildlife ranger says this year is set up for "a PERFECT STORM between bears and humans." YIKEES...No one has ever been eatten in California (yet) though. So far the bears are pretty shy - but they have been causing lots of damage to cabins in our immediate area and around the Lake. The way to get them to move is to spray them in the face with water...no thanks...I don't want to get that close... or make really loud noises. We have our stash of fire crackers handy. If he goes for the toaster though, he's a DEAD BEAR.
Josie, where in california do you live? yikes! do you have to put your trash in bear-proof trash bins?
The Bear Warden also said that twice as many bears live in the Tahoe basin than could be could be supported naturally. I've given up on barbeque for the duration of the bear emergency. That's a drag, but on the positive side, Josie looks sooo cute at the pottery wheel with her father's old revolver strapped to her hip.Safety First!
Hi chi le,We are in the Lake Tahoe area. We live up here in the summer and in Berkeley the rest of the year. We definatly have a bear proof box for garbage. Yesterday a friend of mine on the other side of the Lake told me that a bear had opened an unlocked door and found a feast in the refrigerator. The bear propped open the door with a trash can and devoured only the sweet stuff. I am learning how very smart and clever bears are. We are now keeping our doors locked when we're not around.
That's so scary!!! We're going camping this weekend south of Lake Tahoe, i hope he stays in your neck of the woods!!! Any bear survival tips???
Hey Stephanie,Be sure to put ALL your food in either a bear safe box (that would be provided by the Forest Service at your camp site) or hung up in a tree. Don't leave it in the car out on the picnic table...I don't think you want to wake up in the night in the middle of the Teddy Bears Picnic! But really no one has EVER been eatten by a black bear in CA and if you just make a lot of noise they go away. Good Luck and Have Fun.
The ny times ran an article about all the bears. Here is the slide show...http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2007/08/02/us/20070802BEARS_index.html
